Energy Savings and Efficiency

On average, lighting accounts for about 17% of residential electricity use, but there are easy ways you can reduce your lighting energy consumption without compromising lighting quality or convenience:

  1. Turn off the lights when not in use.
  2. Install and use dimmer controls where possible. [Link to dimmers]
  3. Use motion sensors or timers to automatically turn off lighting – especially outdoors.
  4. Use the lowest wattage and most efficient bulb that will properly fulfill your lighting needs. Modern compact fluorescents (CFLs) can be used in many fixtures that were originally sold with incandescent bulbs. Today’s CFLs come on quickly and are available with pleasing color temperatures.
  5. Look for products that carry the ENERGY STAR symbol. These products have undergone rigorous testing to earn the label, ensuring the best levels of energy efficiency.
